Bishop Sherman & First Lady Vera Merritt

Bishop Sherman Merritt

Bishop Sherman Merritt

was born July 9 1947, in Nashville, Tennessee

He serves as the council's 6th diocesan. On April 3, 1967, Bishop Merritt married the beautiful and personable Vera E. Smith.  Throughout their married life the Lord blessed them with four talented children that they reared and raised well: D'Anbrea, Joselyn D., Sherman L. Jr. (P.A.W International Minister of Music) and Tenia Miles Merritt.

In 1973 he was appointed Assistant Pastor of Greater Christ Temple Church, Nashville, Tennessee.  For 20 years he served faithfully under the pastorate of District Elder W. W. Harris and in July of 1993 he took the helm as pastor of the church.

Although his education began in the Nashville city schools, he furthered it by attending Tennessee State University and majoring in Mechanical Engineering.

Bishop Merritt was ordained in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World, Inc. in 1983.  Later in 1990 he was appointed District Elder in both Tennessee and Togo, West Africa.  He then began traveling to those mission fields imparting the gospel and ministering to the needs of the people of those areas.

In 1992 he was elected Vice Chairman of the First Apostolic Council of Kentucky and Tennessee. After serving two terms he was then elected to serve as Chairman.

In April of 1994, he received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Pentecostal Bible College in Tuskegee, Alabama; yet remained active in the ministry of evangelism and soul winning.

Later in that same year in front of a national audience he was elevated to the office of Suffragan Bishop in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World to serve the F.A.C.  His 35 years of productive ministry also includes faithful service as a member of the P.A.W. National Evangelism Team.

Bishop Merritt has always been a people person with a heart for souls.  He is a natural diplomat always encouraging a spirit of unity and brotherhood among members of the general body of the First Apostolic Council.  His ability to lead has been established and nationally recognized by his colleagues and the general body of the First Apostolic Council.  In August of 2003 he was consecrated Bishop with the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World during the Summer Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. Since then he has subsequently been chosen to serve on the P.A.W.  Executive Bishops' Council.

As the Diocesan of the First Apostolic Council of Kentucky and Tennessee, Bishop Merritt stands firm on the precious word of God and encourages the whole body to always endeavor to move under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.

His work in the Nashville community and surrounding areas includes spreading the gospel by way of radio broadcasts, community tutorial programs and community service outreach projects.  If there was a passage of scripture that currently depicts our diocesan's vision and sentiment towards the work of the Lord, it would be Philippians 2:9-11 (KJV)

"Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and brings under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

First Lady Vera E. Merritt

When First Lady Vera E. Merritt enters a room, in most cases, you may not even notice it.  The book of Proverbs tells us, "A gracious woman gets honor."  "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue".  Your visit to the First Apostolic Council is not complete until you have received a greeting and a smile from our first lady!

She and her husband, Bishop Merritt were baptized in Jesus' name on Sunday May 6, 1970 and filled with the Holy Ghost the very next day while under the leadership of District Elder W.W. Harris of Greater Christ Temple Church (GCTC) of Nashville, TN.

In July of 1983 sister Merritt became the First Lady of Greater Christ Temple and down though the years she has proven herself to be a loyal benefactor and faithful supporter of the GTC family as well as a consummate helpmeet to her husband Bishop Sherman L. Merritt.

Her name "Vera" has two meanings, they are "faithful" and "truth" and this is no coincidence as those who know her will attest.  Although her faith in God is strong, First Lady Merritt is a realist.  She is known for being unreservedly straightforward and down to earth, yet incessantly sanguine despite the many obstacles that she has faced over the years.

With 30 years experience as a Sunday school teacher her spiritual resume is quite Meritorious as well.  In years past she has been an advisor or held offices in the Young Adult choir, Young People's department, marriage enrichment ministry, usher board, as well as the GCTC deacons, trustees and the ministers' wives groups.  First Lady Merritt is also a skilled puppeteer and as such she and a team of volunteers are able to provide Christian education and entertainment for children of God of all ages.

Even with her status as "Bishop's Wife" and a member of the P.A.W. National Evangelism Team, First Lady Vera Merritt always exemplifies the polarity between ceremony and substance by remaining humble and not desiring or demanding special attention or preeminence among the saints.  It is said that through her leadership in the upper room ministry, First Lady Merritt willingly stays long hours and overnight if necessary to care for the new souls as they seek the infilling of the Holy Ghost.  Her concern is not only for the household of faith, she also takes time out of her schedule to volunteer at the local Baptist Hospital.

First Lady Merritt is the Founder and CEO of Sew and Reap Ministries, a non-profit corporation located at 802 Youngs Lane, Nashville, TN 37207.  Through Sew and Reap, First Lady Merritt and her staff are dedicated to teaching practical and marketable life skills to young women in the Nashville, Davidson county areas.

"Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised." Prov. 31:30 (ESV)
